maybe Woodpeckers has been going after insects, or they caused a tree to die and fail right there
some mean looking black ants. I made sure I did not disturb them.
the focus is not as good as I would prefer

A fascinating shot, Richard. Nature at work... Could have been wood-borer worms, I suppose. Then the ants took over their empty holes.

Many of our trees are very old, and the woodpeckers do a job of going after bugs....and the trees fall just like that!
