Description

I was pleased to get an I.D. on this spider from the great folks at BugGuide.com.. Turns out this is the first Texas record of Phidippus otiosus for Bugguide! Eastern Texas is the westernmost edge of its range. There is currently one record of P. otiosus on BugGuide for Oklahoma as well. This is a female and probably an adult. If you look closely, you can see my reflection in it's eyes. I was within an inch of this little spider when I took this photo. So close that the spider kept jumping onto the lens of my camera. Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment on one of my postings. The feedback (negative or positive) is appreciated. Especially for this series. I hope everyone who has clicked on one of them was pleased with having done so. Lee

How very exciting, Lee! Such a great picture!

These jumpers are totally fearless. We have a zebra striped one here which I've snapped in the past.

I've heard of them but never seen one. Now I have a picture to go by, and have looked at the Internet. Thanks! He looks like he has a coat of frost on him. Nice photo, and I like your account of him jumping at your camera lens. A camera lens looks like an eye to most creatures, hence a fight or flight reaction. I don't really like insects, but this fellow looks interesting. Keep up the good work! More photos of him? :-)
