Description
Did this one for a client's webpage. Inspired by Thomas Boyle, real-life privateer captain of The Chasseur in the War of 1812. Boyle and his crew gained a name for themselves when Boyle decided, apparently on his own authority, to blockade the coasts of England and Ireland. Just to make sure everybody in the civilized world knew he was doing this, he captured a British ship and ordered its captain to return to London and post his handwritten proclamation of blockade on the door of Lloyd's Coffeehouse (basically like Starbucks headquarters of its day). Part of the proclamation read:
"By Thomas Boyle, Esq., Commander of the privateer armed brig Chasseur, &c., &c.,-Proclamation: Whereas it has become customary with the Admirals of Great Britain, commanding small forces on the coast of the United States, particularly Sir John Borlaise Warren and Sir Alexander Cochrane, to declare all the coast of the United States in a state of strict and rigorous blockade, without possessing the power to justify such a declaration, or stationing an adequate force to maintain said blockade. I do therefore, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested (possessing sufficient force) declare all the ports, harbors, bays, creeks, rivers, inlets, outlets, islands and seacoast of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, in a state of strict and rigorous blockade. And I do further declare, that I consider the force under my command adequate to maintain strictly, rigorously, and effectually, the said blockade. And I do hereby require the respective officers, whether captains, commanders, or commanding officers, under my command, employed or to be employed on the coasts of England, Ireland, and Scotland, to pay strict attention to the execution of this my proclamation."
Boyle and crew survived several battles where they were outgunned and should have lost, eventually capturing 18 ships and sending them back to New York as prizes of war, all over a course of three months at sea. Naturally, Boyle greatly annoyed the British military, and he was one of the motivations behind their attack of Fort McHenry in September 1814, which inspired the National Anthem. Boyle returned to Baltimore about a month after that battle.
Basically, he was the Captain Kirk of his time.
