Description
YES they do actually have expressions on their faces occasionally!!!! The duty of the Queen's Guard is to defend the royal residence — and make no mistake, that is exactly what they are there to do. Ceremonial they may appear, but these are active British Army soldiers drawn from the five regiments of the Foot Guards. And as T.Rex mentioned, the hats are made of bearskin! Bearskin hats are made from the skin of American black bears, taken annually during the Black Bear Cull in Canada. The British Army takes 100 skins for itself, supposedly a mere fraction of the thousands of bears that are killed to keep numbers in check. There have been endless calls to phase out the bearskin, and even an alleged offer from Stella McCartney to design new faux fur hats. The issue continues to stoke controversy with animal rights organisations, such as PETA, who argue that the practice is cruel and outdated.

Thanks for the mention and the info. Yes, I knew about the bear hunt aspect already way back in the 1960s. And those bear skin hats do last a long time. Nice you got the smile on the soldier's face. But, as you say, they are well trained and mean business. Any doubts can be allayed by checking some of the posts at YouTube. But what I don't get is the grey coat. Winter uniform? Keep up the good work. :-)

Yes the grey great coats are for the autumn and winter months. They are longer and thicker than the red ones, offering guardsmen and officers greater protection against the elements.

Those bearskins are also extremely heavy and many a young soldier has passed out on parade on a hot day.

Nice photo.Culling animal herds is a necessary way to keep numbers down where they have grown too large for sustainability.
