Description
We came across this lioness early one morning. She was actually sitting in the middle of the road staring at some springbuck in the distance. We were hoping to see her hunt but after a while she started walking down the road. I told my brother that I am sure she is on her way to the waterhole about a kilometer away. So we slowly drove past her and in the process I took this image. We drove ahead to the waterhole and sat there for a while watching some oryx have a drink of water. All of a sudden they were very alert and lo and behold - here comes the queen down the road, walked past right in front of my car and went for a drink. By this time the oryx disappeared. She then proceeded to find a shady spot and went to sleep. We left her there and returned much later in the afternoon. We looked for her but she was no longer under the tree. Suddenly I spotted her quite a distance away in hunting mode. Sadly she did not hunt but it was a very entertaining couple of sighting of her!

What a beautiful lady, mistress of all she surveys. Her confident stride reminded me of an old take on the biblical verse; "yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I am still the baddest mother in the valley."
