Description
The Grouin du Cou lighthouse, also known as the La Tranche-sur-Mer lighthouse, is located on the tip of the Grouin du Cou, in La Tranche-sur-Mer in the Vendée (France).
It replaces a 9-metre headlight built in 1831. Following numerous shipwrecks of the lighthouse, a square turret with a 14-metre masonry building was built in 1866 to warn captains of dangerous coastlines of the Tranche coasts made up of limestone bottoms.
Destroyed on the night of 24 July 1944 by the Germans during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in 1950 according to the plans of architect Maurice Durand1.
