Legend? In the late 1950s men working in the New York sewage system encountered a large alligator. It had once been someone's pet and, when it got too big, the owner callously flushed it down the toilet. The alligator was taken care of (to a zoo) and the story became the basis for a legend. I remember this very well, having read about it and seen a photo in a local news paper. I bet the alligator was glad to come to the zoo and have some good, healthy food. :-)
