Description
During the religious wars, Fouras' strategic position enabled him to escape the destruction ordered by Louis XIII for all the strongholds after the capture of La Rochelle. He made it a royal fortress.
During the Dutch War (1672 to 1678) it protected the mouth of the river and fortification work continued until 1693.
When the old fort at Rochefort-sur-Charente became the Royal Navy Arsenal at Rochefort, the Fouras Keep was used to observe ship movements and send messages to the signal tower built near the Wing Commander's lodge.
The fort and citadel were listed as historic monuments on March 13, 1987.

seems very formidable. I have visited a few old forts in the US, but nothing on this scale
