Description

I desperately and unsuccessfully keep trying watercolor. This one is a by-product that came to life by itself on a piece of papers I used to try tones. I only had to place a few accents.

You have made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. All the troubles of the world are in this face. Outstanding work!

It is fun to discover a pearl when you give it time to form....

You know how much I love this!

I have absolutely NO success with watercolours either, I only use them as an illustrative medium.

Sometimes being a fine artist means finding the art when it's 'staring right at you'. Apparently, that's what you did here---you found the art, and you moved-in and gave it outline, definition, voice, presence. I love this almost medieval face---like a character from Chaucer on a pilgrimage to some medieval shrine. It looks like this man (?) is wearing a hood. And you got great eyes out of him, and an expression of unsureness, slight fear, a wanton look. And it's in deep olive and brown tones---like a medieval monastery---with great textures. Terrific job, Nikolay, in spotting the art, bringing it out, and giving it final flourishes. Like you and andrea, I struggle with watercolors---they move too much (and rarely where I want them to). We have a truce. But you mastered them in this piece, that's for sure!
