Description
The Toulinguet semaphore is located at the end of the Crozon peninsula, on the tip of Toulinguet which is located in the commune of Camaret-sur-Mer in Brittany. It is built on a military ground of the National Navy, fortifications built in 1884 control the access. In the immediate vicinity is the Toulinguet lighthouse.
The first signal mast of Camaret-sur-Mer was installed under Napoleon I on the tip of Penhir, it quickly became a semaphore. A second semaphore will be installed on the heights of Camaret-sur-Mer, with a good view on port traffic.
These two buildings were almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. After two years of hesitation in choosing the site, the Navy General Staff decided to build the new building next to the lighthouse on the Pointe du Toulinguet. Construction began in 1949 and lasted 3 years. The technique chosen is reinforced concrete and to make it tons of pebbles located below the cliffs will be raised. During this difficult work, a worker died.
