Description
Captured back on 4/4/09, at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.
The Heinkel He 162 (German, "People's Fighter"), the name of a project of the Emergency Fighter Program design competition, was a German single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe in World War II. Designed and built quickly, and made primarily of wood as metals were in very short supply and prioritised for other aircraft, the He 162 was nevertheless the fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets. Volksjäger was the Reich Air Ministry's official name for the government design program competition won by the He 162 design. Other names given to the plane include Salamander, which was the codename of its construction program, and Spatz ("Sparrow"), which was the name given to the plane by Heinkel.

very impressive aircraft and history. I knew the Germans had created the first jet fighter, ahead of ALL other programs.

A lovely clear capture, but it looks very cumbersome with the top bit. 😀

Had the Nazis had a bit more of a head start, the outcome of WW-2 might have been much different.
Great shot of this plane!

Great capture. I think it's a very good thing the Germans didn't have more of those, or the time to fully train the pilots.

Fast and nimble, but suicidal to try to land in one. Lucky some of the planes survived so we could look and learn. And also a few pilots. Keep up the good work! :-)
