Description
The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, commissioned by Marshal de Richelieu, Governor of Guyenne, and built by architect Victor Louis, was inaugurated on 7 April 1780 with the performance of Jean Racine's Athalie.
Classified as a historical monument in 1899, reminiscent of Antiquity through its peristyle, the 88 by 47 metre neo-classical building is part of the opulent Bordeaux urban planning inherited from the Enlightenment.
It houses a theatre of a thousand seats, a perfect example of Italian theatre.
After more than two hundred years of various uses or successive transformations of its rooms and environment, it has recovered both its original blue, gold and white marble interior decoration on the occasion of its last restoration in 1991 and its perspective as a temple of the muses with the development of the Place de la Comédie and the Cours du Chapeau-Rouge in 2006.
Today, the Grand Théâtre is the headquarters of the Opéra national de Bordeaux, which schedules its opera season and Ballet de l'Opéra performances there. It also hosted symphonic concerts by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine before the opening of the Auditorium in Bordeaux in 2013.

Good photo of a very beautiful building with a long and interesting history. I'd love to see it inside - the grand salon, the scene, the restored marble interior. Thanks for giving us the history, too. Keep up the good work! :-)
