Description

They raced along the forest trail, the trees whipping past in a blur… then, suddenly, the ground fell out beneath them. Stunned and confused, they looked up from the bottom of a deep, sheer sided pit, as the figures of five men moved into view around its edge. They had seen a pair of forest cats fall into their trap, but now there was only one cougar… and one remarkable beautiful, young woman scowling up at them; her tight, black leather cloths doing little to disguise her slender, feminine figure, while her raven hair was worn in a short, wild mane. “Well, well, well… looks like we bagged us a shapeshifter,” their gruff leader remarked, “and a damn pretty one.” “Let’s pull her out of there so we can have some fun with her,” one of the other roughs sneered, his lustful expression making it clear what kind of fun he had in mind. “Maybe we shouldn’t,” one of the more skittish of the group cautioned. “Who knows what else she might turn into.” “What you will do is get us both out of here before you regret this more than you’re already going to,” Kara snapped up at her captures, her soft grey eyes ablaze with barely contained furry. “What do we have to regret?” the leader taunted. “You’re the one at the bottom of a pit with no way out.” Instead of answering, Kara threw her arms upward as they transformed into feathered wings, and a large owl shot from the pit to wheel over their heads. But it was Kara’s booted feet that landed gracefully behind them, and with a snap of her fingers a deadly-looking spear appeared in her hand as she taunted back; “What was that you said?” “It’s still six against one,” he mocked with a sly grin, but didn’t move to draw the sword sheathed at his hip. “I only see five,” Kara retorted. But no sooner had the words left her lips, then she heard the sound of shattering glass at her feet and a cloud of foul smelling vapor enveloped her. In the split second before the world dissolved into blackness, she recognized the smell of the alchemical sleep gas. The fog of unconsciousness slowly faded for Kara’s mind, leaving her momentarily bewildered as to why her arms ached. But then the reality of her situation hit her as she shook her head clear of the lingering effects of the sleep gas; she was hung suspended from her arms between the branches of two trees, and there was something heavy and uncomfortable sitting on her head and shoulders. “Well look whose back with us,” taunted the brigands’ leader as he approached to stand before her, his lustful eyes hungrily consuming the delightful curves of her slender form. “Time for a little fun!” “Less fun than you think,” she snapped back venomously, focusing her mind on the form of a brown bear, but to her surprise, she found that she could not change her shape. The brigands’ leader laughed in Kara’s surprised face, while the realization that her druidic abilities had somehow been suppressed sunk home, as he raised his hand to stroke the heavy thing draped over her head and shoulders and taunted; “Druids lose their powers when they wear metal armor… or didn’t you know that?” Craning her head down to see what they had put on her, Kara recognized the intertwined links of a chainmail coif. Not enough armor to provide her any protection, but enough to violate her sacred oath and render her druidic powers useless; leaving her all but defenseless.
