... and we'll let the media frenzy go where it wishes at this point... By the next news cycle, all of this would be old news anyway...
I'm always fascinated by government scandals and how they're seen in the media. During the run of this, a friend commented that, had Trump actually had sex with a man, Fox News would have spun it into "See? He believes in inclusion!" — and he's probably right. I am just amazed that someone who has lied so much and so consistently is still heralded as a beacon of America at its finest. Of course, maybe he is, and maybe that's something about America we really dont want to discuss.
I came out during the Reagan era, back when presidents, their staff, and the media all found LGBT folk, but gay men in particular, as a source of riotous laughter during press briefings. It was an era when members of the US congress boldly suggested that all gay men be rounded up and shipped off to concentration camps, lest they infect the general population with this new thing called GRID. And when they died, their ashes could be sent wherever their ashes were supposed to go, in "fruit jars". Yuk yuk.
Not to be making too much of a comparison here, but with all the talk about how the history of Black America needs to be taught in schools so people will understand what they had to endure, I'd like to suggest that maybe America's history of how it treats sexual minorities would an excellent add-on to that. In this era of new-found acceptance, we forget what gays and lesbians had to deal with. It wasnt pretty, folks, not by a long shot. And what made it all the more horrifying is that Straight America did it with a wink and a giggle... like the infamous FBI memo that mandated safety nets around the upper floors of the Empire State Building "so as to reduce the risk of homosexuals jumping off and causing property damage to cars parked below."
Yes, they actually wrote that.
So as we celebrate Pride Month, let's not forget where we came from, boys and girls. Simply because you never know when the political mood of the country takes you back there again.
OK, a bit of here and there over the next few days, then a possible storyline dealing with a retro influence. Still deciding if I should go there with it... yeah, it's one of those. :-)
