Description
“Tangled Trees lies a day or so south,” Coran offered after a moment of consideration.
“Since we’re already headed that way, it’s as good a destination as any,” Kara agreed with an amused smile.
The rest of the day passed in pleasant conversations that ranged from varying interpretations of Selune’s dogma to how Kara found Sheera as a starving cub, assumed that her mother had either been killed or abandoned her, and raised her. But as evening fell storm clouds gathered overhead and the air grew thick with the scent of impending rain.
“We had better find shelter,” Kara advised as she eyed the threatening weather, then surveyed the surrounding forest for signs of somewhere they could ride out the coming storm but saw nothing promising.
“Allow me,” Coran tendered, kneeling in the small clearing they had stopped in to get a better look at the sky and produced a tiny metal sphere from his belt pouch; speaking the word “hut” in elven as he placed it on the ground. Suddenly the breeze stilled around them and they were in the center of a softly illuminated twenty-foot diameter, slightly shimmering transparent dome. Then the rain that had been threatening began to fall, but rather than landing within the illuminated area it softly drummed against the magical field.
“A handy convenience,” he smirked to the surprised druidess, who watched the rain strike the clear dome and run down its curve with an impressed smile.
“Handy indeed,” Kara admitted in a mildly bemused tone, stepping to the edge of the dome and reached out to touch its surface only to find her hand pass through it without resistance. “But not much in the way of privacy.”
“Oh?” Coran challenged, gesturing for her to step outside the dome with a knowing smirk, as he began unpacking items form his backpack.
Stepping forward, to poke her head through the dome, she saw it was opaque on the outside, closely matched the color of the forest floor, and showed no sign of the light that illuminated the inside; from a distance, it would easily go unnoticed. Moving back to the center of the dome she realized that it was decided warmer inside and gave him an impressed smile as she settled down next to him and accepted the small cloth bundle he held out to her. Unwrapping it she recognized the contents and beamed approvingly; “Elven bread… how nice.”
“Nothing but the best for my guests,” he teased with mock formality, pulling a large piece of dried meat from another bundle and tossing it to Sheera, who snatched it in mid-air and proceeded to gnaw away contently, before unwrapping his own piece of the nut and dried fruit laced pastry; one piece of which could easily sustain a man all day.
Dinning on the fortified bread and water from a skin they passed between them, they continued to converse pleasantly, talking about their past travels; the places they had seen, the people they had met and the challenges they had faced. All the while Coran couldn’t help but be completely captivated by the truly beautiful woman, finding himself gazing into her soft grey eyes longingly. Which didn’t escape Kara’s notice, and she found the attention delightfully flattering, having spent far too much time alone in the wild with only Sheera for company.
Finishing the meal as their conversation slowly ebbed from casual to mildly flirtatious, Coran suggested that retiring to get a good night’s rest seemed to be the best course of action, hoping to avert his rapidly growing attraction to her before he did something he would regret. However, as he pulled a bedroll far too big to fit in it out of his magical backpack and laid it out near the center of the dome, Kara eyeing the handsome monk while unrolling her own nearby, her sly smile slowly morphing into a capricious grin as if she had made the decision to act on her own impulses and do something decided risqué.
