Description

Amanirenas was queen of the kingdom of Kush in Nubia from around 40-10 BCE. Her title was Kandake (from where we get the name Candace) She is famed for leading the Kushite armies against Augustus Caesar after the fall of Cleopatra and the subsequent Roman expansion southwards. Following her initial military successes she is said to have buried a bronze head of Augustus under the entrance to the main temple in her capital of Meroƫ, so that he would always be beneath the feet of the Meroites. Contemporary accounts by the Greek historian and Geographer Strabo describe her as "Candace, queen of the Ethiopians in our time, a masculine woman, and who had lost an eye".
