It makes for a great looking scene, but I find it hard to make out the positions.

You're right. It is hard to make out the positions. And I always have to check it in Top View or at least in 45° view from top, as you would have in a real game on your table.
I wanted the view of an outside visitor. This - and the limited background picture - reduce the the possible viewpoints. And I was curious, how to manage 33 Figures in one set.
But be assured, I always check the positions on a (virtual) chessboard, its the opening of a real game.
