Description

"Sometimes, sitting in the dark, we felt so isolated. The radio was our lifeline to the rest of the world, to bring us news. "At the same time, sometimes, it was too much. The war--it was a lot to bear. At times, we tried to get away from it, to take a moment and get away by reading a book. "But we never could, not for long. The radio. It was there, our friend, our addiction, to bring us news ... of the war." ---------- Thanks for looking! SuSoleil

Very nice. I like all the little details – you really paint a sense of place with the books, old radio and the comfy chair. The only detail that doesn't ring true to me is the book he's holding. Everything else paints a portrait of World War II and the 1940s, but that type of paperback book did not exist at that time (especially with a cover design like that). It's a small thing, but it did pull me out of this otherwise deftly crafted scene. I could almost smell the tobacco (LOVE that light touch with the smoke – so many people overdo smoke and you most certainly didn't) and sense his trepidation as turned up the evening news to find out what was going on in the Pacific, Africa or Europe. Thanks for taking us back in time!

Thanks for the detailed comment. I had the same thought when I inserted the paperback. Maybe I'll go back and try to find a hardcover, or something, see what the Brits were reading during the war. Anyway, thanks a bunch.
