Description

July 24, 2018, 5 PM It's been 36 degrees Celcius / 97 Farenheit here in Sweden for over 2 weeks. This is like the summer weather I endured during summers in Philadelphia. But... of Sweden's 22 provinces half of them are burning right now (59 fires!). Sweden's fire defences are inadequate for the great areas affected. There is also a lack of water due to the drought! Fire fighting equipment and man power have been sent from the following countries- Water bombers (6 cubic meters capacity) - 2 French, 2 Italian, 2 Portugese Helecopters (1 cubic meter capacity) - 8 Norwegian, 5 German, 1 Lithuanian. More are coming per order of the European Union. Worst is that the fires jump from tree top to tree top, spreading rapidly and widely. The high temperatures result in high winds, creating fire storms (like in WWII). There are loads of volunteers helping the firemen with food and drink. Over 20,000 hectars (50,000 acres) are burning right now. And, the fires burrow under ground among dead leaves and pine needles to pop up elsewheres. Yesterday, Varberg (a city half way between Gothenburg and Malmö) got a big fire in the center of town. This is too close to me for comfort. The grass here is a "nice" California yellow. This is the largest fire situation the country has ever had. And, we must remember the drought before the fires started! At the same time, the temperature at Antarctica is -148 degrees! I was out twice today - the second time was to take these photos. Though the leaves look green, they are as dry and brittle as they can get. Magpies and crows are hopping about, gaping with thirst. Sparrows are flying about like mad - I assume they are going for insects. For my own part, I'm not feeling well, and am trying to get all university stuff out of my apartment. And they are sure taking their time with it. This is why I have been rarely seen here at Renderosity during the past few months. I'm not saying "Enjoy" to these photos for obvious reasons.

Michael I’m sorry to hear about the fires. 2 years ago we had thousands of acres burned during the drought.
The National Forrest was arson. It’s a depressing site even now. Please stay safe.

Sorry to read of the climate change firestorms all through Sweden. Greece currently has had some ultra terrible ones with many deaths. Denmark is dry from lack of rainfall, and watering the lawn is forbidden. This is very familiar to us Californians, who have had to endure out-of-control firestorms over several months of the year, even for decades. Down here in Southern California, 100 degree Fahrenheit temps and beyond, even near the beaches, are common from July to October.

we have been in the 100's each day for 9 days. we had a cold front today keeping the temperature below 100F, but tomorrow the forecast is for 106-109 for next several days. Greece has many fires on the coast. many people died when a rescue boat sank in the sea. there are many fires across Texas as well several other states.

at least we did not have a repeat of a summer when we had 70 continuous days of excess of 100's F with a record high. I was working then with many days being outside .

Summer 2011 is officially the second hottest on record for the United States and the hottest ever for Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana, according to a release from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Association

Texas took the lead as the hottest state this summer and now holds the record for having the warmest summer on record of any state. Dallas just hit the 100-degree mark for the 70th time that year, making it the highest number of 100-degree days ever recorded in a year there. Number of 100-degree days for select cities (as of Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011) --Wichita Falls: 100 days --San Angelo: 96 days --Waco: 85 days --Del Rio: 82 days --Austin (Mabry): 83 days --Austin (Bergstrom): 69 days --Abilene: 79 days --Dallas: 70 days

I hope the fires there stay away from your city as well as others. so many homes and life's has been lost in the US.

It does look like a pleasant day, but looks can definitely be deceiving. I've seen reports of the fires in Sweden - and all over the world. I think mother nature is beginning to flex her muscles - man has ravaged this planet for far too long, and it looks like payback is just around the corner. And to make matters worse it seems like the crop of blathering idiots winding up in control shows no sign of growing an ounce of common sense.

I hope the fires stay well clear of you, Michael, and I do hope you start feeling better soon, my friend! Summer ad the Girls send hugs your way!

we're reaching temps that should not be, but if you talk to the Repulicants, there is no such change as climate change - it's the will God... I wish your country as well as other countries affected by this change can get a handle on the situation

I was unaware of this. Thanks for sharing. It has been five days since you posted this, so I'm going to google to see the current situation. Wild fires continue in California and while that is common place it is still heartbreaking to see whole neighborhoods looking like they are ravaged by war. I wish you luck and rain.
