Description

This little enamelled brooch, or 'pin', as our American friends call it, is 1/2 " , 15mm across. My Grandmother's brother James A Varey worked there when it was a British colony. He was a civil engineer. I have found an online archive mentioning him as appointed as assistant engineer 1913, so this dates this object. Before that he was in Ceylon as it was then called where he is mentioned as an Irrigation Engineer. I know he was involved in the building of the railways there..

How interesting! I like seeing this piece of history.

I think of a broach as something fancy that a woman might wear to accessorize a nice suit. When I think of Dutch and Afrikaans, though, I don't feel so bad about our language differences. :P

Timothy Tew of TEW galleries in Atlanta calls brooches "finely articulated miniature sculptures." A pin, at least here in the colonies, is usually an inexpensive circle of aluminum with something printed on it, usually vulgar or political (same difference). This, on the other hand, is a beautiful, colorful and intricate work of art with a stain glass look to it.

This, madam, is definitely a BROOCH.
