Description

The sun was setting, painting the sky an angry red when the captured drow, Adamar Yhendorn, was unceremoniously marched from the keephouse in the Riders’ compound and forced to his knees before the hooded axe-man. Only Haresk Malorn, High Councilor of Mistledale, Nerval Watchwill, high priest of Tyr, and a few Riders, including Willow, witnessed the axe fall; Coran and Taenya elected to be elsewhere. Siting at a table in a quiet corner of the White Hart Inn’s common room, they tried to focus on something other than the execution they knew was being performed at that moment, just as they tried to ignore the furtive stares and grumbling whispers from amongst the other patrons… with no greater success. Only being vouched for by Willow had gotten the innkeeper, a gruff retired adventurer named Holfast Harpenshield, to agree to allow Taenya under his roof, but she cautioned the drow priestess to exercise more discretion in her ‘prayer’ tonight, advising her to find a secluded spot amongst the trees down by the river before stripping naked and dancing for her goddess, Eilistraee, under the moonlight. Taking a deep draft from his pint of ale, the same excellent brew from the Abby of the Golden Sheaf that Willow had shared with them, Coran’s distracted mind eventually became aware that the din around them had changed. At some point the accusing whispers had been replaced by the sound of music and a lilting voice singing an old elven ballad. Following the sound with his eyes, he spotted the source sitting near the great hearth; a strikingly beautiful half-sun elf with a short mane of raven hair, predominately black cloths… and a gorgeous face that he instantly recognized! He knew the wandering bard, Mistale Nightsong, quite well, having met her during his travels several years before and thoroughly enjoyed their time together; but, as seemed to be his fate, their paths had diverged far too soon for his liking. Taenya noticed the sly smile that grew on his face when his scanning eyes settled on the minstrel, drinking in the delightful sight herself, and observed capriciously; “She’s quite lovely… isn’t she?” “Yes, she is,” he admitted, turning back to the bewitching drow with a knowing smile. “She’s an old friend… we traveled together for a while some time ago.” “Oh,” the alluring dark elf smirked, certain that ‘traveling together’ meant exploring more than just the towns and wilds of the dalelands and forest, taunting mischievously with a feigned pout of jealousy; “I’m guessing you’ve ‘traveled’ with quite a number of lovely young things before me.” “A few,” he confessed with a wicked grin, but then added with a regretful sigh; “but, for all the pleasurable boons the Moonmaiden has given me, her fickle whims take them away just as often.” “It isn’t the fate of those who serve a high power to live ordinary lives. We must accept that our paths are often dark, dangerous… and lonely,” Taenya observed in a more serious tone, then cooed seductively with a sultry smile; “but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy the moments of pleasure we are granted in return for our service.” “Well, well, well… if it isn’t Coran Dundragon, humble student of the Sun Soul, as I live and breathe,” Mistale’s lilting voice surprised them both as they failed to notice she’d stopped performing a few minutes earlier, making a bee-line for their table, until she plopped herself down in the chair beside him, snatching the pint of ale from his hand and taking a deep draft before setting in back down in front of him, continuing with a coy smirk; “and in the company of a daughter of the Dark Maiden… so far from her Velarswood temple… no less. This has the makings of a very interesting tale.”
