While I agree it's the choice of the owner I hate to see this sort of thing too. It's not just in the US, it happens here as well. Just down the road from a friends house there's a Jensen Interceptor that's been sitting in a garden for 30 years.

I honestly think the owner made this his own personal work of art in his yard. He basically buried his car but he made a somewhat memorial to it even though it's in really rough condition. I really like this!

I had a neighbor who had a beautiful red/white coupe. I guess these old Olds aren't very common, so it's a shame to see one deteriorating away like this. But as you said, it's the choice of the owner.
For those who have committed themselves to restoring or preserving theirs it just makes them more rare and more valuable.
