Description

A Haboob is approaching the Phoenix, Arizona area on 2 August 2018 at 18:30. The temperature was 109 F (~43 C). Haboobs are dust storms which occur regularly in dry land area regions throughout the world. Here in Arizona they most often originate from cold downdrafts of huge thunderstorms over the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Tucson area, about 110 miles southeast of Phoenix. Sometimes they may also come from the northeast of Phoenix, generated by thunderstorms over the Mogollon Rim. They only occur in summer, and their frequency seems to be increasing..The front of this particular dust storm was 100 miles (160 km) wide and one mile (1,500 m) high and it was approaching the Phoenix area at about 45 mph. When a dust storm approaches warnings are broadcast over emergency radios, cell phones TV stations and radio to warm drivers to pull off the highway if possible and turn off their lights to avoid massive pile ups. This picture was taken on 2 August 2018, Sig...
