Description

Lady Godiva was an 11th century noblewoman married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia and Lord of Coventry in England. According to the story, Godiva was deeply concerned by the excessive taxes her husband had levied on the good people of Coventry. Time and time again she asked him to reduce the taxes, to which Leofric quipped that he would lower taxes only if she rode naked on horseback through the middle of the city (Clearly believing that this would never take place!). Godiva was determined to help the people, and so she removed all of her clothes, climbed on her horse and galloped through the market square with only her long golden hair to cover her. When she returned after finishing her naked horse ride, Godiva challenged her husband and demanded that he hold up his end of the bargain. True to his word, Leofric reduced the people’s debts. How much of this is true, is not known, but it's a great story and here's an image to go with it. Thanks for looking in.
