Description

Probable fortification of the castle of Saint-Mesmin: 1372/1375 The 1367 ordinance could continue to be observed after 1372 in Poitou and in particular at the Château de Saint-Mesmin. Moreover, the authority of the Lord of Parthenay was at its lowest, after 1372, the period of the fire of his barony and his submission. Thus, Pierre De Montfaucon would have undertaken major fortification work at the Château de Saint-Mesmin between 1372 and 1375, without any opposition from the Lord of Parthenay. This fortification is mentioned in a later text where it is specified: that Pierre De Montfaucon had restored the Château de Saint-Mesmin to a state sufficient to support a siege and that he had built new buildings. There were his furniture and house train, sergeants and court officers, a right he had from time immemorial.
