Description

The Montfaucon stronghold from the 12th to the 16th century On May 10, 1276, the De Montfaucon family was mentioned for the first time as Lord of Saint-Mesmin. On this date an act was passed "in the court of Jean De Montefalconis, militis, domini Sancti Maximini", or "knight, lord of Saint-Mesmin". At that time, the land of Saint-Mesmin was part of the Vouvant and Mervent movement, two fortresses belonging to the Larchevêque family, Lord of Parthenay. On March 20, 1360, Jehan de Montfaucon was knight and lord of Saint-Mesmin and de la Fosse (commune of Mouilleron-en-Pareds), bailiwick of Vouvant and Mervent. A text from the middle of the 14th century states that the old castle, belonging to Jehan de Montfaucon, is in good condition and fortified.
