Description

The docent here was very animated with his visitors and clearly enjoyed what he was doing. He mentioned the radio and gyro rooms along with the tidbit that the equipment was being restored, so the Weese had to poke in there and then come back for the bridge tour. Glad I did. Early on (near the end of this tour) I mentioned that SAVANNAH had no problem announcing her presence and that there was a hoop on the mast over the bridge which helped out. The hoop held the gizmo in the upper left of this image. You can see it just over the heads of the people leftmost in the image. It resembles a multi-faceted roundish object with roundish glass inserts. Those inserts are Fresnel lenses and the roundish thing sat on the mast in that hoop. The docent described it as a visual fog horn. When SAVANNAH's horn was sounded, the light in the object would flash and the Fresnel lenses (same as used in lighthouses) made sure everyone saw her as well as heard her. Neat trick, IMO. Another neat feature is the odd structure that is just visible behind the ship's wheel. It appears to be made of 2 x 4 lumber painted the same color as the rest of the bridge and it resembles a chair. It is a chair, the captain's chair, and it is made out of 2 x 4's because the crew built it and installed it as a joke. The skipper was rather short, so they built this high-chair thing as a prank. The joke was on them; the skipper liked it and insisted that it stay put. I meant to come back and get shots of these, as well as a shot of a group photo which shows the skipper among his officers. It's good to have a sense of humor. Enjoy; thanks for viewing. Almost done, guys.
