Description

BROWN also served as a troop transport for about 600 men per load. That's one of the reasons the armament was beefed up compared to some of the other liberty ships. I spoke with a co-worker whose father travelled like this: HOT, very hot was his main memory. I can also imagine crowded and boring. Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_John_W._Brown for starters. There are plenty of web sites devoted to the BROWN. Only part of the hold has been restored to give an idea of what troop accommodations were like. Most of the crew bunked in the main superstructure and conditions were not too different from what we saw the Naval Armed Guardsmen had in the after deck house. That is how the simple folk lived; we'll take a gander at the digs for some of the honchos in a few frames. Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
