Whoa! A 15 year gap! (Your last submission is marked 2003.) Welcome back!
Weren't the end "cap" elements of that illuminated tube array (the actual Hollywood prop) derived from swimming pool pumps? At least, that's what I read somewhere. Funny how it was mocked in Airplane 2 (dating from around 1982), by William Shatner. no less, but it was still being used years later.

Yep. A fifteen year gap. The old place has changed a lot since back then. I was amazed to see my old images were still here, and my password still worked.
And as for the prop, they were filter baskets, yeah. I believe the specific unit used was known as a "Baker hydro skimmer." The earliest use of the prop that I've been able to find is a 1981 episode of Buck Rogers called "Shgoratchx!" - and yes, the prop is still in use to this day.
Buck Rogers, Star Trek, Knight Rider, The Last Starfighter, The Flash (90s version), Austin Powers... this thing's gotten around.
...and all these years later, nobody still knows what it does apart from blink.
