I don't know why, but some of your portraits remind me of de Kooning, only without the mad lines and heavy abstraction...but you have an essence somehow...this would be a very creative photograph, as you're zooming in to get an intense 'inner' closeup. Those red lips really stand out against all that pale flesh; and again you have these highly intense eyes, made all the moreso by your 'crop' (forgive the photographic terms): You cut her off, making her presence all the more imposing. She juts into our space, she intrudes. Looks like you scratched into your pastels too. You have a combo of studied drawing with the feeling of very quick, rushed lines, a mix of deliberation and suddenness. It's powerful, Steve. Her forehead almost spills into her face. Very introspective work.
