Great close-up shot showing interesting details of these mushrooms. Fungus is part of life, every human, animal and vegetal have to live with them in a competitive/cooperative basis. Fungus, like mushrooms, takes over on the weaker or dying ones. I love that photo!

Looks like these are a variety of turkey tail mushrooms--and, no, they did not kill the tree, but are playing an important role in the process of already weak, decaying vegetal matter by breaking down the dead organic matter and returning vital nutrients to the soil.
