“The young lady has been deliberately sabotaging the robot placement programme and impeding the further development of robot units. To further her declared aim of removing robot units from the workplace she has been creating confusion in robot minds by requiring them to consider concepts which no robot can analyze and evaluate, thus causing them to ignore all and every other robot-suitable concept and in effect bringing them to a complete standstill. Such units cannot be brought out of what is, in effect, a trance or coma by button-pushing and disconnection of power; nothing short of a replacement of the affected brain by a new one can return a robot to its normal state. This is a very expensive and time-consuming process and the prosecution requests the maximum penalty for her actions.” “The Court has listened to the arguments of both prosecution and defence. The prosecution may care to mull over the fact that there is no law which covers the actions of this young lady; the law covers the actual physical destruction of a robot, not its disabling by verbal command. We can, however, in view of the pecuniary cost of her actions, required her to serve a Public Duty term. It has been established that there are some robots which show the glimmerings of personality and emotional reactions and which can process the orders she gives them. We have read the report created by one of these robots, written in her defence. The court considers therefore that, since the young lady’s skills might be better employed by the Government in developing a more efficient and capable sentient robot workforce, her Public Duty term will be served with the Government Robotic Studies Unit.” I think we know who wrote that report!
