Description
I did not see this large one next to the dead tree with many growing on the trunk. it may have been covered up with leafs. 2-3 seedlings are growing out of the mushroom.
Goldie's comment Looks like these are a variety of turkey tail mushrooms--and, no, they did not kill the tree, but are playing an important role in the process of already weak, decaying vegetable matter by breaking down the dead organic matter and returning vital nutrients to the soil.

From what I understand they have a huge network of roots underground. They're kind of like an iceberg - we only see a tiny bit.
