Description
Lake Michigan (once more)...
Ok, these aren't 'imitations' of Harry (I can't imitate him): They're 'my' stuff. For a truly special person.
Harry is 91 today. (I can say that because he's been forthcoming about his age.)
What amazes me is that Harry---even after health issues that could've felled many a lesser soul---is out photographing all the time, getting the essence out of everything he notices---its 'attitude', its beauty. its humor, even its strangeness. A poet once said: "Don't say "there are no poems here": There are poems everywhere: You just have to look..."
Harry finds poetry in peeled paint. I mean genuine beauty. And in abandoned shoes that've given up the ghost and have been lounging in alleys. He's got a whole series of these in fact, and he always gets their 'speech', their humor and---if it's in them anywhere---their beauty. He's done sprinklers in the sun, sun-obliterated tracks, pickup trucks that've been in brawls and dare you to take their pictures...and shadow shots w/ old bottles and twigs and leaves on concrete---gets the poetry, the haiku---even with his reading glasses. Some of these shots are pure abstraction, and I love them. He gets their poems, their sonnets.
He also has one of the finest series of flower shots on RR (so many gorgeous shots), which he coaxes and finesses until they sing. Not to mention glorious antique-car shots, and homeless people shots, and gardens and architecture, and so on...
And he's been very kind to me from the start, his comments are always supportive, erudite and witty. And...he fought in WWII: He fought in the Pacific, and was one of those brave souls who helped keep our world free. I never forget this. Harry's the real article...
So why these pics? They're are my way of saying Thank You Harry, for your treasured friendship, your always total support, and your huge array of inspired, studious, humorous and always beautiful photographs. Happy Birthday and lots more; you're a jewel...with love and wishes for many more years of health and true inspiration to come, all of which you deserve, Mark
(still commenting...I'll get to you all!)

this is beautiful. the blues are so lovely. the abstract shapes are imitating the flow of the water as the waves bring in the tide. all three images are wonderful and they make a fantastic birthday gift.
Happy Birthday, Harry!

A wonderful contrast to the boldness of the previous two images. I love the colors and how calm the flowing water and effects make me feel. A beautiful dedication to a talented friend.

You describe Harry wonderfully Mark! and you You are so right Mark, when you say that ''Harry finds poetry in peeled paint''. I agree! His gallery is enormous and is not in few time that we can admire all that he has done along the years. Some need that we sat in front and observe them well. I love his collections, his flowers , his memories, his experiences and his view of life that he shows in so many ways in his comments. I love to read Harry a lot:) And your images, Mark:)) are a feast for Harry from top to bottom! I can find your words in each one of them...fire, fights, strength, poetry and love, above all! I adore them! It is a meaningful and very beautiful present,Mark. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARRY and many, many more. Much health and please continue gracing us with your art. I love to see your Bryce! Happy Birthday again:)

What a wonderful and colorful series for Harry's 91st, Mark! I've been following his work for a while now, and I have to doff my hat to a man who at just under a century still has the will and ability to get out into the world and SEE. And preserve what he sees with his unique vision. How many of us would stop to consider - much less photograph - an old pair of shoes, long cast aside by their owners. I always wonder what the story is behind those shoes. It feeds the imagination. And of course his play with shadows is always a treat... Art seen in the commonplace. And his roses and other flowering wonders of nature. The best of both worlds.
Happy Birthday Harry! And thank you for your service to our freedom!

Love that seaside bg with your design in front my friend. Nice Trio of dedi's for him. I only hope my dear mother makes it into her 90's
I agree with Rod on abandoned shoes. Telling stories. I Don't see many where I travel.

Well, I'm stunned by this third part of your BD dedication, and not the least the stirring, touching comments my the members above. I didn't realize I had made such an impact upon the viewers. Thanks to all! Despite my many heath problems, I have no idea why I've lasted so long. Clean living perhaps. Anyway, I love your loverly image of Lake Michigan generating high reflectivity, with what appear to be abstract sailboats floating atop. Ultra cool, and thank you again, my friend.

This is a delight with spring green and sea blue colors and your gorgeous Lake with all the reflections. I am amazed by how many gorgeous roses Harry has Photographed, but I have always adored his Light/Shadow Photos. He can make a pair of Eye glasses look fantastic in the right angle and light/shadow. I love that, but I also love his tree trunks. They are so beautiful, they always amaze me. I could go on for hours.....Happy Birthday Harry. !!
