Description

Learning from Others is important. My dad used to say to me, "A wise man learns from his mistakes. A wiser man learns from the mistakes of others." I'm sharing this image because I made some mistakes here, and perhaps others can learn from what I'm going to point out. 1) There are two catch-lights in her eyes. There should only be one. When positioning a fill light, do so in such a way that only the main light produces a catch light. (Yes, I can take this out in post, but why make more work for myself?) 2) It's flat and you almost can't see her nose. There's a tiny light ratio here, but not enough to really separate the nose from the model's right cheek. So, to fix this, I could have simply moved the fill light further away (thus, reducing it's output) and more to the side so the 2nd catch light would disappear. Other than that, she's a beautiful model and the image does her justice. However, the image has these technical flaws as I pointed out.

I've always thought of the "1 catchlight" as more of a guideline tbh - if you are doing something like butterfly lighting with a big reflector under her chin, you are likely to get a catchlight from that too but I think it adds to the charm. You are right though, she is beautiful!

Yes, with butterfly lighting I try to get a faint catchlight at the bottom of the iris which makes the iris pop.

Then there's the no-catch-light eye where you go in post with a "catchlight" brush and add them. I've been guilty of that from many a cloudy day session.
