Over 16,000 variations of the T-6 Texan were built by various manufacturers. North American Aviation's prototype, the NS16, first flew in April of 1935, and further modifications on the basic design remarkably remained in service until 1995. With so many units produced, it's no wonder that there are still so many around flying today! The T-6 has a number of designations depending on the model and entity using it. The US Army Air Corps and US Army Air Force used the designation AT-6, the US Navy used SNJ, the British Commonwealth air forces version was renamed Harvard, and the US Air Force designated the craft as the T-6. Basically, the AT-6 was employed as an advanced training aircraft, but it also served in the Korean War and Vietnam as an artillery spotter and forward observer platform. (During the Korean War they were nicknamed "Mosquitos".) The T-6 has also seen action in some countries in the ground attack and support role. The T-6 is a very popular staple of airshows and recreational jaunts even today.
