Description

A couple of cone flowers (echinacea) in my garden. Shot with a lens I built from scratch for Canon EOS mounts. The aperture of this lens is shaped like a fern leaf (as you can see in the bokeh of the image.)

Interesting optical effect, I've seen some kind of aperture shape setting in a number of render engines but never thought to investigate what it does.

The effect called "bokeh" are "rings of confusion" created by the diverging light rays. Because the light rays have to pass through the aperture, they converge and diverge in the shape of that aperture. Most cameras have either a round or polygon shaped aperture. That's why the "bokeh" appears as little circles or octagons (or some other polygon depending on the number of blades in the lens' iris).

So, when I cut out an aperture that looks like a fern leaf, the rings of confusion take on that shape. Had I made a heart, they would have looked like little hearts. Etc.
