You will not convince me of driving such machine under water, no way! LOL I have the impression that if such machine is stuck at the bottom of a shallow river, the operators can get out of it through that big tube. Is-n-it? I think that this tube is an accessory to be installed instead of the regular hatch.

You are right. This tube is for deep water. The commander of the tank looks out of the top to give instructions/directions. The Leopard II has this "Schnorchel" too.
