How it became burned? It was the sun? or was burned in a fire?. A great capture , anyway.

I think a fire. Before it was a park, cattle ranchers used the area and introduced non-native grass. Now that it is dryer the grass dies off in the summer and does not decompose well. Thus creating a tinderbox for fires to start.
