Description

This is a really low-resolution, crappy photo from many years ago (circa 1990 or so) - taken with a Sony Mavica camera that had a massive resolution of 640 X 480, and stored about 20 images on a 3.5 inch floppy disk. Anyone remember floppy disks? I had to dig this out and post it after reading Mark's description of taking a sip of this stuff. A lady that was in our photo club at that time brought a bottle of it to one of our meetings as a subject for a talk on product photography. Being the sweet and generous soul that she was, she also brought a bunch of little plastic shot glasses so any of us that dared could sample a sip. I dared. Now you know why I'm the way I am. Mark said it would take the chrome off a jeep. He was being moderate... This stuff is radioactive. I took a sip and my head exploded. I still haven't found my hair. It set off fire alarms when she took off the cap. The fire department showed up in hazmat suits. The last I saw of that bottle, they were loading it into one of those big metal tanks they use to haul bombs away... Nothing terribly artistic here, but I remembered I took a photo of the label when I saw Mark's comment, and I just HAD to dig it out! Thanks for stopping by, and for all your awesome comments and support!

great macro and I use to like brandy, but can not drink any hard drinks without tearing my stomach up. a friend of a deceased friend of mine in Mexico always offered brandy when I would visit. he would not take no for an answer

Never tried it when I used to drink, don't drink alcohol now so it's likely I never will. I'll take your word for it that it's rather stronger than the average booze, and can cause some amusement in onlookers when consumed by the sound of it...

Wow - I remember the Mavica with floppy drive. It was so expensive I couldn’t afford one. All I thought back then was, “this is the future”... and look where we are today! Thanks for sharing :-) As for Slivovitz, I only know it by reputation, I never had the pleasure myself. I’ll take your word for it. Nastrovje!

First, Richard reminded me: It's not a liqueur, it's a brandy! Ah well....But second, I was so happy to know that you had the same experience with this 'drink' that I did. (This 'beverage'. Right...) Love that it blew your hair outa your head...exactly! That's a freakin' drink, dude...And hazmat suits: You're an initiate. (Did they take it out in one of those 6 foot thick lead tubes that they use for fissile materials?) There are people---like that woman above---who say "it's tasty". (Tasty???I wanna say: "Pardon me??? This stuff could wipe out a small village, and you're talkin' tasty'???") You remember a story I posted a ways back, about a WWII pilot who met Himmler? He said that he drank Slivovitz during the war, and it was one of the "worst experiences of the war". Duuuude: You gotta figure, if Slivovitz was worse than meeting Himmler---that's one f___ked up drink!

Also, yes, it's often spelled "Sljivovica" (and also "Slivovice") but they're all pronounced "slivovitz" with a tiny "uh" at the end. I remember the round bottle and the gold hue. So glad you understand. (My grandfather drank it every weekend, even here in the States. And he didn't have money, so you know he wasn't drinking the 'premium' stuff: Maybe that's why he was short, and didn't live too long.) Great upload...I love it; and I was amazed you actually had a pic of this stuff. (I thought it was from an ad...but no, you actually SHOT it! With a hi tech camera, lol...) Love your specifics---great upload! They should keep this stuff in silos under the earth...(I knew some Russians who had it for breakfast. Mmmm! Beats orange juice, huh? Stomachs of freakin' steel, is all...)

Rod, your commentary alone is worth 10 images !! Loved the backstory. :-) Don't know Mark but if he is your friend (and based on his commentary above the reasons why become obvious lol) that is a powerful endorsement. So thank you, Rod and Happy Birthday, Mark !! :-D

I love the picture, high-tech and all, and your wonderful and fun commentary about the effects and after effects of drinking this fine Kosher brandy. Now I want to find some and try it out (in the interests of science and all that) besides, it can't be any worse that some of the alcohol I've drank in Africa (that stuff can be used as rocket fuel on a good day)

Don't think I would drink something that removes chrome. Love the label and is a great capture Rod. Don't drink please. Another great dedi for a awesome person, friend artist and writer.

Never been much of a drinker - especially that stuff... 😆 Word has it that the engines on that big yacht the Girls just acquired are being refitted to use it as fuel...

This is so funny! I loved your story. You seem to back up Mark's opinion of this stuff. I wonder why it's so nasty and strong... is it because it's made from old plums? Do plums ferment on the stone or in the bottle? Hmmm, either way, I think I'll pass. Thanks so much for sharing this photo.

Hey, they could save on TNT, gunpowder or whatever they use to manufacture bombs and use Sliivovica instead (why the two iis in the name?). All this and it's kosher for Passover. No thanks, I'll just stick to Manishevitz. Great shot with highly legible text considering the age of the 640 x 480 photo, and I remember the floppy disks well.

Now, Rod... the 3.5 inch disks were called Stiffies by the ladies in the quilting guilds. Which seems appropriate for this image!!! Great fun!!

I love stories like that. But you are pretty cutting edge my friend. I was still pinching pennies to by kodak film back in those days. I think the plant in Brampton was still open back then.

Cool pic. We used to carry Slivovitz at the store where I worked, never dared to try, sounds like I made the right choice. 😄

Someone brought a jar of moonshine to a party once and talked about how smooth it was. Ray said it could have been used to de-hair a hog. That is after he got his breath back. Some things should have a skull and crossed bones on them.

Yes! I remember the days of the Mavica and 20 'high quality' images on a 1.2mb floppy! LOL! I have to say, I am amazed at the quality of your image, considering the technology! I'm guessing that if you had it to do again, you would have missed that particular meeting! LOL(again). Well, I'm glad you are still here to tell the tale!
