Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Definition: 'Ecological Indemnity' A Language English1 expression for an informal but perpetuous understanding Civilization Gardener may cultivate with the memberships of other civilizations. In simple terms: Civilization Gardener may collect biodiversity from a civilization's birth world or other established colonies supporting that membership. The purpose being to seed one or more Gardener preserve planetoids.2 In exchange, such planetoids may be summoned by the donor civilization for the purpose of membership and technological evacuation should the need arise.3 Also colloquially described as the 'lifeboat pact' - or through similar translations - though it cannot be formally classified as such or even a treaty. In pursuit of their social purpose, Civilization Gardener demonstrates the least adherence to the Ethic of the Community.4,5 And any civilization's birth world carries the most diverse, complex and unique biodiversity compared to other life bearing worlds. Nevertheless, Gardeners will not approach a world bearing a strong presence of technically minded membership without approval and cooperation from that membership. In seeking aproval, they offer emergency resettlement within these donated biospheres as shelter against the event of planetary catastrophe. Hence the expression, 'ecological indemnity'. Even with centuries of foreknowledge, a civilization may still face extinction if their home planet and core society are lost.6 In the event of an impending eden crisis, the Gardeners will transfer their planetoid back into the system from where it was seeded. Often at a Lagrange point between the donor world and its central star.7 The world in crisis can be partially (or fully if time and population allows) evacuated. Then the planetoid is subsequently removed to a nearby sibling or similar star. Removals normally remain within the donor civilization's one percent (1%) transit range.8 Though in the case of Civilization Pavo, they were removed from their original sphere of influence due to the passage of a black hole 1.27 million (106) years ago.9,10 Removal, in conjunction with possible evacuation to established colonies, enhances chances of long term civilization survival. These planetoids are still considered Gardiner domain. A subtropical continent is often engineered for the purpose of rescue. Donor membership is considered 'compatible' and 'ken' with such a preserve's biodiversity and so will not compromise the biosphere. In fact the native friars will maintain a donor technological framework to speed the establishment of survivor communities should they be needed. The understanding being that the rescued membership will not make a permanent presence elsewhere on the planetoid.11 This arrangement is also noteworthy as it is a rare example of two technical civilizations established long term within the same biosphere. See references: 1Civilization Humanity: Linguistic Types 2Civilization Gardener: Summary 3Definition: 'Eden Crisis' 4Definition: 'Social Purpose' 5Definition: 'Ethic of the Community' 6Event: Disappearance of Civilization Isis Elder 7Definition: 'Lagrange Point' 8The distance which can be traversed by donor space flight technology within one percent (1%) of membership average life expectancy. 9Definition: 'Sphere of Influence' 10Event: Migration of Civilization Pavo 11This condition can be negotiated at need with local Gardener friars.

Hmmm, just how big are these planetoids that they can be moved about so readily? Is the Civilization Gardiner God?

Really fascinating narration - I can imagine uncovering this in some massive galactic library on a distant planet. Very well done!

Glad to see you're back writing entries to the Encyclopedia. I must say this entry is BRILLIANT! The art and the narrative. I don't know how else to describe your work and your mind. This is the stuff of serious and science-based hard core sci-fi. You even had me looking up "Lagrange point". I wonder how your encyclopedia will be published, at some point. Obviously in a digital format. Perhaps even dramatizing some of them through animation or live action. An epic work in the making! 10++
