Description

Literally.. This kind of reflects my mood right now... The crew from A.B. May came out today (called at 7:30 AM) to run the bigger rooter through my sewer line. When the rooter came back up, it had about a bushel's worth of nasty roots wrapped around it. It took the technician a good 15 minutes to get it untangled from the cutting head on the rooter. Then they ran the camera back down.. I wish I could have had a copy of the video... it was quite an experience. Anyway, to make a long story short, I have about 71 feet of terracotta pipe that's full of fractures, dirt, roots, worms, gravel and everything else that shouldn't be in it. Which means the entire length running from the house to the city main sewer has to be replaced. At a cost of $10,000.00. Unfortunately I have to do it - whether I want to sell this place (I do), or spend the rest of my life here (I do not). Hopefully, I can recoup some of that when we sell this place. On top of that.... My next-door neighbor Joyce had to move her mom to a memory care facility, and she has already moved to a duplex. Joyce was a good neighbor, and we always got along well. But she's turned over the handling of the property to her brother - who is just the opposite. He's a Class A1 asshat. The contractor will of course need to bring in an excavator to dig up the old sewer line and put in the new one. I do not have vehicle access to my back yard. But the house next door has a wide driveway that accesses her (or his now) backyard. I asked the brother if the contractor could bring in the equipment that way. They would have to take down part of the fence, but would put everything back the way it was when complete. He glowered at me and gave me a firm "NO!" Jerk. I can't force him to allow access, but Joyce would have - as she did before when the tree company came out a couple years ago. The contractor said they could come up the utility break behind the houses if necessary, but I don't know how they can get through there. I guess that's why they get 10 grand for jobs like this. Anyway, I'm not in a really good frame of mind right now, and my activity here might be spotty for a week or so until this is all done. Still... I'm glad it's my house's pipes and not mine... Please keep our friend Steve (Eekdog) in your prayers as he deals with yet another mountain to climb. Godspeed, brother, and prayers for quick and complete recovery. Thanks for stopping by.

Been there (without the nasty neighbor!) Done that!! Several years later Mom had it done too....
Well hers was just before we moved to OKC... So they put in a bull nose and there was a nice mound of dirt in the back yard.
Beloved Daughter Chile (henceforth BDC) agreed to run the garage/estate sale for all the stuff we weren't gonna move... she got the money, we didn't have to move or worry about these things...
So a couple guys come back into the house from the garage and ask the BDC what happened to Grandma... They were somewhat worried about the Six foot long, 2 foot wide mound of dirt in the back yard!!!
So, Rod, as long as no one is obliquely accusing you of burying someone in the back yard, it's all good!! ;)

I was afraid of that, my father in law had a similar problem and it was 14K! Good to vent using your artwork! 😄

I feel your pain... But all you can do is trust in your contractor and, as you said, be glad it's the house's pipes not yours!

Plumbers are so dang expensive. there is labor hand digging under your house, but the excavator will make short work of the trenching. if mine needs to be replaced, I will rent the excavator and do all the work except connecting to the city. maybe your home will have more value with a new sewage system. not a bad time to replace your water line also

your render reminds me of the man standing in a commode and saying goodby cruel world!

When I saw Dan I thought "Good, it wasn't Rod's money," and then I read your account. 😬 I hope you get some of that money back. Maybe after all that rooter work your home value will go up!

And I sitemailed Steve. Sending him all the good vibes I can!

Bummer sewer issues my friend, I'm in the hospital for now, was or still might have surgery to remove bowel blockage. But like last time it freed itself open again. If they don't op on me I could be out tomorrow. Sorry difficult reading while holding my arm in right position to type. Best of everything my friend.

Oh boy ! That is what I was afraid off. That is a bummer. I do hope you can recover the cost when you sell the house. If fact that may be a good thing to highlight when selling that the house has new sewer pipes and will last for decades. I hope they use the strong PVC ones that can withstand root and other wear and tear. Yup, the company will know how to deal with the no access issue. It is part and parcel of their day to day work. I am sure they face that kind of situation everyday.

Yup, read Steve's post. Fingers crossed everything goes well and he recovers soon.

Owning a home is like keeping an expensive mistress...do some cosmetic work and easy repairs and sell the dang thing and take the money, invest it or just put the proceeds into the bank and use those funds to pay rent...life is too short to have to be aggravated by stupid, nasty neighbors and a house that is just one big headache. I grew up in houses and owned two of my own, but never regret living in a rental at this point in my life...no cleaning gutters, no mowing lawns, no repairs, no land/school taxes, etc. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with this latest adventure :)

Ah, the house money pit strikes again! Like Rajib said though you can point to the new sewer line with pride--and promise no one was buried with it :D Being able to use the sewer line will be such a relief, too!

I'm grateful you don't have home movies to show us of your sewage pipes. That would be akin to when I had a colonoscopy, which I neither need nor wanted, but was mandatory part of my health care plan. Anyway, afterward, the doc holds out a dvd of the procedure and says, here this is for you. I was like...what? Are you nuts, no, I don't want home movies of the inside of my guts. So, I left it with the doc... wouldn't you know, they mailed it to me.

Hey those are always good to watch after a good lasagna dinner... 🤣 I still have the photos from my colonoscopy - and my hernia surgery - and my gallbladder surgery... LOL

Oh' scare's over, is this the house in the video? That's more than annoying, but don't get too tragic, there are worse things in this crappy world, so take care and stay safe my friend!

Good luck. Already been there for this. Had to replace a tank, two lines and fix the leaching field. I don't have city sewer or city water. We have 200 foot well and septic system with a tank and drainage field. Was put in back in 1954 and fixed in the late 90s, I'm not going to repeat the cost here. That said we were adding an addition to the house at the time, but this added on about a third more of the original cost. It hurts, but in the long run it's for the best, kind of like a colonoscopy!

Great rendering reflecting your sorry experience with your nasty roots and neighbor. Depending on the circumstances, this is the best of times and the worst of times. Hope something positive emerges from all this.

Ouch!... that's got to hurt!... only I think I'll take the money and run for it. I do hope you get this solved and that it doesn't cost that much. but I think the image is interesting... what will I do here.

This is really a crappy situation RodS. After all is said and done I believe you will re coop the 10K when you finally sell the property. Can I make a constructive opinion and solution. I feel your neighbor deserves respect for being so empathetic to your problem. May I suggest that the piping contractor re-route your sewer pipe just below your neighbors back porch. Good luck with the fix.

lol on some of the comments, incl racolt33's suggestion to re-route your pipes to your neighbor's porch. (That's Harry's son, btw.) I'm not officially back yet, but I see everything, and I'm sorry I'm late to this Rod, because I felt really bad for you when I read this. You work so long and build up a nest egg over many years; then you retire, and, within a year or two: Boom! You get hit with a whopper, and you can't avoid the expense. I hope you recoup the money in your sale, and then some (lots of "then some"!), and I'm sorry this hit you like a ton of bricks. Isn't it amazing what nature can do to hard materials? How it just grows right into them? I'm sorry you have to do all this---incl the upheaval and invasion, as if the cost weren't enough. And you have to pull up your toilet too...When I first saw your image, I was so surprised to see that man there, and that big picture of poo. Then I saw the cash in the toilet, and I knew something was wrong. Then I read your description...I'm also sorry your new neighbor is making it so difficult. You had some preparation for this craziness in your last year of work as well all that happened after; but I thought the crazies would be done with, after all that. The gods apparently had other things in mind for you...so I hope this is the last of it, Rod. And I mean the last. The gods can play reruns...it's enough already...

I saw about a third of your mera video (spelling? the woman with the wild red hair?)---I didn't have time to see it all yet---forgive---but what I saw was just fascinating, because I've never known how poser works, and I was amazed to see you piece the image together step by step, incl turning that zero gravity hair into the red flame-hair that you finally created. Poser really is a bit like digital audio software, in the atomized step by step nature of the work. I'll comment on your other recent pieces soon, but I wanted to send my wishes to you and Jo, and hope this is over with quickly, and that you recoup everything. I guess I can't sign off without at least one piss-poor joke---this is money down the drain (I'll spare you a "pipe down" joke, or any line about "sue her" ((sewer???)), because who needs lousy humor at a time like this?) All the best to you and Jo, and my wishes are with you both through the upcoming journey of selling your home and going through this pipe business.

(I've had terrible problems posting and commenting lately---I'm praying this comment shows up. Here goes...) All the best to you, Rod!

It never rains but it pours. Could Joyce pull the "Sister Card" and persuade her brother to give you access? I'll keep my fingers crossed that they come up with a workable solution that gets the job done quickly.

What a major headache! I like the idea if rerouting the sewer onto your 'neighbors porch and giving it to him! Shit to shit! Or shit for the shit head! Anyway, that is my take on it! Maybe something will happen in the good side of the cosmic experience that will straighten this all out for you! I certainly hope and pray so!!!!
