Description
Thick black smoke billowed through the darkness, lite only by the smoldering embers of what was once the estate of a minor house of Maerimydra. The inferno had moved on, sweeping across the drow city like a flood of devastation, leaving few to grieve for the many lost… not that the drow were known for their sympathy for the fallen. It was for the loss of their power and prestige that they would mourn.
Lolth had fallen silent, and in her absence Kiaransalee, lady of the dead, had taken Maerimydra in a torrent of fiery death and destruction. But the decimation of evil by evil was no cause for celebration, even though it might offer a respite for those above. For a vacuum often drew in more than what was there before, and two evils held in check by each other, were less dangerous than one held back by nothing!
Amongst the smoldering ruins a pale figure picked her way the ashes, scavenging the dead for anything she could find of use to survive what was sure to be the most harrowing ordeal of a young life already filled with far too much pain, loss and misery. The ravishing of Maerimydra left her with but a single path remaining; the one to the world above.
For nearly fourteen centuries peace had reigned between the elves of the great Cormanthor and the men of the Dalelands; marked by the raising of the Standing Stone, the monument that stood even to this day as a reminder for all. But when the elves heard the call of the Retreat, and surrendered their stewardship of the forest to men, their ancient mythrals, the mantles of high-magic that protected their woodland homes, began to fail and fell to the corruption of their cursed kin; the drow. Now the peace lay broken, even as its monument remains as a mockery of the ancient promises, and dark forces tread the formerly treasured forest’s paths.
News of Maerimydra’s fall filtered out to all then denizens of the forest, but their short-sighted rejoice was short-lived, as even more drow found their way to the surface; adding the surviving faithful of Lolth to the fractions vying for purchase within the woodlands, despite the continued silence of the queen of spiders.
The path through the Underdark was long and harrowing, leaving many lost and fallen along its darkened trails, and those that emerged faced the light of the sun, often for the first time in their lives. But every drow who endured the trial added one more measure of suffering to those who dwelled in the forest’s shadow.

Yes I'm back... I apologize to everyone still waiting for the conclusion to my last series, but I it seems my muse got lost in the dungeon of my last posting (i.e. I hit a writer's block that I have not been able to get past). So, I tried a tactic that has worked for me in the past and went back to a series I did in the past and "revisited" it.
For those unfamiliar with my series; the alpha-numerical non-scene in front of each image title is my way of tying them together. The first group is the title and version of the series, in this case Tangled Trees (TT) version two (I tend to “revisit” series over and over again to try to improve either the images or narratives, or both). The second group is the “book”, in this case one (I rarely seem to hold focus long enough to get to a second “book”), and the image/narrative sequence in that “book”.
I’m using Poser 11 with Victoria 4.2 and Michael 4 for my characters… I know, I’m now four generations out of date, and I haven’t jumped on the La Femme band-wagon just yet.

Welcome back zaq :) Nice image. Writers/Artist block is a pain in the thingimigigeries for sure :) Good to see some work from you and I hope you find your muse!

Thank you for your kind comment! For the moment, my muse for this series (who you'll meet in the next image) hasn't abandoned me. But, here's hoping she doesn't get lost somewhere along the dark paths of the great Cormanthor forest!

"For a vacuum often drew in more than what was there before, and two evils held in check by each other, were less dangerous than one held back by nothing!"
A marvelous insight beautifully phrased. :-)

Thank you for your kind comment! The advantage of "revisiting" your old work over again is being able to fine tune thoughts and verbiage you used in the past... the result is you get to sound more clever than you really are.

Nice to read one of your passages again. :)

Great to see you writing again :) ! I think revisiting a story might be a great idea to see if that can help to get over a writer's block. If fact I am thinking of redoing from start another story I had left unfinished. Hopefully this time the ending of that story will come to me... Wonderful writing and yup I agree, the paragraph two about the evil was masterfully phrased.
zaqxsw
Thank you for your kind comment! Hopefully my muse will not wander off into the forest and leave me lost and alone this time!

Welcome back. Glad to see you're writing again. I'd seen you commenting here and there and hoped you'd be able to start uploading again. I'd say tie your muse to a chair, but she needs to be able to wander so she can bring back such wonderful tales for you to tell.
zaqxsw
Thanks for your kind comment! You know what they say, if you love someone set them free... If they don't come back, hunt them down and kill them! (Just kidding... I still haven't found the b**ch)

Good to see you back in action, my friend! And in top form, I might add...
I know all about 'writer's block'.... With everything going on here, my muse seems to have kicked back on the couch and doesn't want to do anything but binge watch old episodes of Mary Hartman...
You phrase about 'revisiting' your older work struck a chime... I think I might just do that tonight.. I really need to get things moving again..
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the continuation of your epic tale!
zaqxsw
Thanks for your kind comment! Good luck with your "revisiting"... I've used this trick many times. Hopefully you can get your muse off the coach and back in action!

Welcome back my friend, it's great to see you finally posting again. I have a lot of catching up to do with your story as you can see lol. I haven't been on Rendo much recently, due to other artwork obligations and work (such as it is). But I will be coming back as often as possible to read and enjoy! I'm also currently reading the Mueller report which is fascinating as well. Thanks for coming back and sharing your incredible stories!
zaqxsw
Thank you for your kind comment! I truly hope my story isn't as depressing and frustrating as that report!
