Description
A Consolidated PBY "Catalina" makes a welcome appearance for these ditched airmen.
Search and rescue missions during WW 2 were coded "Dumbo" and the name transitioned to the Catalina flying patrol boat, a more than welcomed sight to many a downed air crew and shipwrecked seaman. The Catalina was a very successful aircraft during the war in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. In addition to its famed air-sea rescue role, it served in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing missions, transport, and convoy escort. In its air sea rescue mission, the Catalina could drop supplies by parachute (including life rafts), spot location and radio for additional help, or make a sea landing and rescue the crewmen.
The US Coast Guard also operated the aircraft during the 1940s and 1950s. The most widely produced aircraft of its kind, the Catalina was still serving the military in the 1980's and still operates as a fire fighting platform in many areas today.
Consolidated PBY "Catalina" model (with some minor tweaks) generously free at sharecg by Pedro Caparros. (thank you once again, Pedro!)

One of my favourite aircraft! The Catalina is still the best looking of all flying boats to me. Many people owed their lives to the crews of the Catalinas both during and after the war. The lighting here is superb, as is the composition.

Nicely done image. Good lighting and poses. Conveys a story. IMHO, too much empty space on the left side. By taking some off it would focus more on the main part of the image. - Bob
