Description
Last weekend I had dinner at a friend’s home. There were ten of us including her youngest son and his new bride. Since I am old and it’s my job I offered them some advice before the evening ended.
I suggested that, if they had an interest and were able, they should travel when they are young. First, the young are better able to move around and generally have better stamina. Second, if you wait it might be gone when you get there.
Notre Dame's construction began in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII and was completed in 1345. It survived an artillery bombardment of Paris during the First World War. It survived World War Two when the German general occupying the city refused to burn it down.
Today the 850 year old worldwide treasure burned.
The iconic steeple. Gone.
The famous Rose window. Gone.
Some holy relics damaged or destroyed.
Tonight France is in mourning. Though the walls still stand Notre Dame will never be the same.
Lessons learned?
Life is uncertain.
There are no guarantees.

A tragedy indeed. But it could have certainly been worse.

Good advice and well said. The fire at Notre Dame is a terrible tragedy. I hope the foundation and stone works weren't too damaged from the heat. I imagine it will take a few years to rebuild, and I do hope they rebuild. Watching the steeple topple over was painful to witness.

A great loss.

Thank you very much for homage !!
I assure you that when you turn on the television and the first image you see is the burning arrow falling, it is a considerable shock even if you are not a believer. This Great Lady is more than 850 years old and is part of the heritage of many people on this earth. Many of us will not see it rebuilt again because it will take decades to rebuild what our ancestors left us.

Between watching this beautiful and historic cathedral burn, and getting my backyard dug up, it was a gut-wrenching day. Thankfully, much of the building was saved due to the heroic work of the Paris firefighters.

Very true Marc! How many times have I thought "I'll do it tomorrow ... I'll tell you next time ... when we meet again ..." to discover that tomorrow is no longer possible ... that I'll never be able to say ... that We will never see each other again. Life is now. Later it will be very late.
