Description

Myst was stunned by Mykal’s offer. Barely more than a day ago she had seen herself as nothing more than an escaped slave and thief who survived the devastation of Maerimydra by the whims of fate… a pathetic refugee he’d taken pity on. Yet mere moments ago she had seen herself reflected in a mirror and barely recognized the strong, determined woman who stared back at her, but apparently that was who he’d seen for some time… because he’d just invited her to join him as a companion. More than just a bedmate or lover, but a partner in his life of adventure; the type of life she could never had even imagined just days ago. Knowing that it could mean placing their lives in each other hands, she was taken aback by the realization that he would trust her to that degree… and that she felt the same way about him. In addition to danger and death, it would likely also mean frequently facing hardships and distress, but that had been the norm in her life to date. “I assume we have to wait for the end of this ‘winter’ thing to get started,” she stated in a tone rich with mock impatience while a wicked smirk grew upon her lips. “That would be wise,” he replied in a sarcastic tone as a cheeky grin of his own crept onto his face. “So, that means we’ll have to find some way to entertaining ourselves for the next couple of months that will not get us banished from town or thrown in jail. Any suggestions?” “I can think of a few,” she mused capriciously, sliding close to him and hooking one hand behind his neck to draw his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss. “But right now, I’m thirsty, and I seem to recall you mentioned a tavern this morning. I’ve never been to one… it’s not someplace the drow allow their slaves to frequent… at least not unless they’re there to service the paying customers.” “Then to the tavern we go,” he replied with a warm smile, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. He knew that the half-drow, regardless of how alluring she was, would not receive a warm welcome from either the staff or the other patrons, but there was one near the boarding house that he spent a good deal of time at when he was in town, and hoped that his past patronage… and the substantial amount of coin he had spent there in the past… would soften their attitudes, at least a little. “I see you brought home a stray,” Keya’s dulcet tones were thick with a capricious taint as she turned around a chair from the neighboring table and sat, uninvited, beside Mykal. They both had fully expected to be greeted with suspicious, even hostile, glares when they entered the tavern, but she was more concerned with his distraction by the minstrel performing an elven ballad. The moment they entered, he seemed to recognize the voice lilting above the murmuring rumble of the tavern and strained to catch a glimpse through the throng that gathered around her. By the time they had gotten tankards of mead and settled into a small table by the back wall she had finished the ballad to rousing applause. Standing to take a bow, she caught sight of the unusual couple and made a bee-line for them. “I’m no ‘stray’,” Myst growled, scowling at the conceited invader. Then, turning toward Mykal, she inquired; “Someone you know?”
