Description

Sometimes a photograph is taken, and years later, it is discovered. I took this photograph years ago. I worked for a market research company. I’d just quit the make-do job I’d had, being underpaid for moving dental equipment. Now, almost a decade later, and after a number of highs and lows, I’ve discovered a photo that inspired the idea for a story that I’ve forgotten. In 2017, I’ve had 13 short stories published, professionally, and more are to come. Perhaps I’ll look at this photo at some point in the future, in some room in Prague (or another Czech city) and the story I’d planned will return to me. It will be changed, no doubt, it will reflect something I’ve learned (or at least endured) in Berwyn, Illinois. There was life before Berwyn, as this image indicates. There is most certainly, life after Berwyn, Illinois. I look forward to it, and—if luck goes in my favor—I will regain something beautiful that was born as I lived there, looking for life outside of that sad, little suburb. In the meantime, here is an image from before that time. Something worth remembering, if only for sunlight, warmth, and someone waiting for a northbound El-train. Thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week(end.)

Sometimes a picture can do that. Trigger a memory, jump start inspiration. I've been going through some of my older pictures for that very reason, trying to get my muse to come back. This place Berwyn seems to have had quite an impact on you. Have you thought of writing about it?

And in the very unlikely event that you have not heard of it, here is a link to the new Ursula Le Guin documentary. Its been showing all over the world and there is a signup page to be informed when more screenings are planned.

His train was late that afternoon but it did not bother him. Today he was glad for this respite, glad to drop the weight of his weariness for a few extra minutes. The weather was not ripping winter's claws or filthy summer's rain - with that dirty, chemical after taste. Nor was the platform clogged with grumbling human indifference - sprinkled with not so quiet desperation. Here a rare eddy of calm in the city's perpetual storm of noise, motion and grimy light. The machine, such as he called his city, had stumbled here. Perhaps some seventeen tonne cog had finally given out after a century of abuse. "They'll soon fix that", he thought with a slow grin never knowing exactly who 'they' were.

But for now- he had never seen one but he knew the sound nevertheless. Somewhere, beyond those dangerously worn tracks. The tracks he foolishly trusts each day. Beyond the chewed, potted, weed infest asphalt. Somewhere, within the decayed labyrinth of bricks and concrete, dare he believe that there was a bird nearby.

Okay, so that just came out of me. There is just something about waiting for a train which is rather other worldly. I am assuming that this is a train platform of some sort. I could easily be wrong about that. Needless to say that your photo is very inspiring. I also wanted to ask where I might find some of your published work?

Cheers!
