Description
The freedom we have today would not have been possible if not for the sacrifice our forefathers paid with their lives...
From a post somewhere on FB:
The outnumbered PEFTOK (Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea) 10th Battalion Combat Team defeated the numerically superior Chinese People's Volunteers Army 44th Division, prevented the Chinese offensive and turned the tide of the Korean War on the side of UN Forces. Although the 10th BCT had lost all contacts with the outside world, the Filipinos held their position until the Chinese stopped their attacks on the morning of April 23, 1951.
Battle of Yultong is known to be one of the best acts of valor of our Filipino soldiers against a sea of Chinese forces; who at that time was aiding North Korea.
United Nations aided the South Koreans while the Chinese and Russian governments were assisting the North Koreans. Chinese men were then deployed that totaled a 700,000 thousand troops while Belgian, Turkish, British and Filipino soldiers were sent to reinforce Yultong grounds under the United Nations.
On April 23, the soldiers were surrounded by the Chinese Communist soldiers and left overwhelmed and outnumbered. The 10th Philippine Expeditionary Force was constrained to throw grenades and gun fires that eventually temporarily halted the Chinese troops.
The Turkish troops were forced to be routed and the British troops were also forced for a withdrawal. Only the Filipino Soldiers were left to fight against the howling sea of Chinese soldiers. The Filipino soldiers kept their lines strong that it even included the cooks and clerks that time. The act of valor among the Filipino soldiers took place at 4 in the morning when they had a surprise counter back against the Chinese armed forces and were caught completely unaware of the attack. They suffered an enormous number of casualties that night that drove them away temporarily. The Filipino soldiers were then successful in linking back up with the allied military forces. The battle was then dubbed as the “The Fighting Filipinos” and is considered to be one of the greatest acts of valor in the modern era.
Some say that the platoon leader of the Filipino unit had died or had gone missing. The troops did not receive a command for a retreat and so they fought until they attained victory.
