Description

From mid 1940 to 1944, the US Navy's main carrier based scout/dive bomber aircraft was the Douglas SBD Dauntless. The Dauntless gained notoriety as the bomber that took down a number of Japanese aircraft carriers, notably the IJN Akagi in the battle of Midway. The list of performance advantages of the Dauntless reads like an Academy Awards presentation for aircraft : good handling and maneuverability, long range, rugged and durable, it could carry a devastating bomb load, was very effective as a dive bomber in delivering its payload, and had good defensive armament.
