Captured 8/8/2009 at the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens in beautiful San Marino, California.
Since I last posted the first photo of this cactus I found a new folder full of photos of this particular species.
Echinocactus grusonii, popularly known as the golden barrel cactus, golden ball or mother-in-law's cushion, is a well known species of cactus, and is endemic to east-central Mexico.
It is rare and endangered in the wild, where it is found near Mesa de León in the state of Querétaro, and in the state of Hidalgo. The population was critically reduced in the 1990s, by the creation of the Zimapán Dam and reservoir in Hidalgo. The cactus grows in volcanic rock on slopes, at altitudes around 1,400 metres (4,600 ft)

Another of your cactus shots where the cacti seem to have separate personalities, where they seem to have a 'group consciousness' to match, and where you bring out a deep luminous quality in them, partly through your razor sharp contrasts. A beautiful, character-ful capture: These guys look like they're taking a mild bow after a performance. Great use of light and composition. (They're like prickly laundry bags! Great shapes.)
